Chapter Six

The silvery bells of every tower rang in a cacophony of announcement. Alexey jerked up in his bed, book tumbling off his stomach, and glanced around with wide eyes. He had settled down for a light nap after his morning lessons with Porfiry and Vasiliy, which had devolved into soft touches and softer kisses.

Alexey had grown used to their affections, enjoyed the fingers which tapped his neck or slid along his cheeks. Sometimes Vasiliy would press his face in the crook of his neck, or Porfiry would wind his arms around his torso and hold him close. Alexey found he could not deny them, would not, did not want to. They only smiled for him, after all. He wanted more, too, and blushed at the thoughts which clouded his mind.

Lessons, especially those of magic, were still frustrating, however. Alexey's threads of magic slithered from him fast enough to burn. Porfiry and Vasiliy said his magic leaked like a sieve, or like an endless font at times, and they had forced him to fold the edges of his power around himself like a blanket. To stop his own power from leaving him at the slightest breath, he should sculpt it like a shield around his body.

Alexey personally thought it felt more like a coffin. Still, he obeyed them. Porfiry especially seemed troubled by his magic spinning outwards constantly. Though Vasiliy could be just as bothered and Alexey would never know; he was so difficult to read sometimes. Alexey did not feel any different—he was just as tired as before—but Porfiry and Vasiliy insisted it was unnatural. They either did not know what caused the leak, or would not say.

The bells continued. Alexey ruffled his hair, tousled from sleeping, and rolled out of bed. He shoved on his boots and whipped his cloak around his shoulders. The stupid bells had woken him from a very nice dream. He had been tucked neatly in the folds of Porfiry and Vasiliy's black cloaks, reading in front of a fire, and Fiori stood in the corner with glowing green eyes and held a pair of red gloves. Well, Alexey amended, that part was strange. Fiori kept trying to get him to wear the gloves, but Vasiliy and Porfiry would not let him. The bells clanged loudly and Alexey shook the thoughts from his head. No time for a silly dream now.

The bells meant only one thing when they all rang at once: Under-King Glastok had returned to Kalinstad and was on his way to the Palace Dyed in Red. Alexey wrung his hands together. He didn't why know, but the feeling he had met Glastok before pricked at him. It was not implausible—in fact, it made sense. Alexey had been in Kalinstad for a hundred years, living under the same golden domes as Under-King Glastok. Yet he only had a fuzzy recollection of meeting him on a few occasions. Well, now that he was a Darkrow both Porfiry and Vasiliy insisted that he properly introduce himself.
